SUMMER SAFETY FOR DOGS

Learn About Swimming, Travel, Fireworks Safety and More

KEEP YOUR FURRY FRIEND SAFE IN SUNNY WEATHER

To prevent any harm from coming to your four-legged friends during summer, any potential threats present in your environment must be identified and avoided. Read on to learn about what these threats might be, and how you can keep your dog safe this season.

CAN DOGS SAFELY SWIM IN THE OCEAN?

Taking your dog to the beach can be a fun and exciting experience for all, but with it comes some risks to think about. First, just like everywhere else the Ocean is home to a variety of creatures that could harm your dog, such as sharks, sea lice, and jellyfish just to name a few.

While these may be rare encounters, just be vigilant when allowing your dog to go into the ocean.  Another big concern is your dog drinking the salt water.  Definitely make sure to stop your dog from ingesting salt water and provide ample fresh water and shade for your dog. Its possible for short haired dog to get sunburn, so make sure to take plenty of breaks from the sun, and apply sunscreen to especially susceptible breeds.

HOW DO DOGS REACT TO FIREWORKS?

With Summer usually comes the increased usage of fireworks, and it’s important to think about your dog when utilizing them. Dogs don’t understand the dangers of fireworks and as the video shows, can react unpredictably. You will want to keep your dog away from fireworks when they are launching as well as away from any left over material to prevent ingestion.

Many dogs are also terrified of the explosions and will attempt to hide or flee, even yanking a leash right out of an owner’s hand to get away.  So make sure that your dog is in a safe place when firework explosions are anticipated. For dogs that are terrified, some helpful ideas would be keeping the dog inside its crate and attempting to deaden the sound with a sheet.  A white noise machine might also be helpful.  They also make ear protection for dogs, that may help block out the noise.

PREVENTING OVERHEATING IN VEHICLES

Leaving your dog in the car should be avoided at all costs, even with the windows down or the AC running. Even well maintained vehicles with temperature monitoring gear can fail, leading to the death of dogs.  Even with the windows down, the car warms up much faster than the outside air and will act as a de facto oven.

CAN DOGS GET SUNBURN?

Dogs can definitely get sunburn! Especially those with thin coats or no coats, or those dogs with white coats and dogs with light-pigmented noses and eyelids. Some Examples include Collies, Sheepdogs, Dalmatians, Bulldogs, Whippets, and others. Just like humans, dogs can wear sunscreen to help protect them from the sun’s rays. You can also have them wear special protective clothing that is designed with UPF protection which has the added benefit of protecting against mosquitoes and other insects. There are also protective googles your dog can wear (See our own K9 Emery Sporting a Pair) to help protect their eyes.

TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION

Our detection dogs undergo extensive training to ensure they are equipped to detect a wide range of substances. Typically, the training process involves exposing the dogs to various scents, enabling them to differentiate between the target substance and other odors. Once the dog has mastered scent detection, it learns to alert its handler to the presence of the substance through specific behaviors such as sitting or pawing at the source.

It is crucial that detection dogs and their handlers are certified by a reputable organization, such as the National Narcotic Detector Dog Association (NNDDA) or the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA). This ensures that the dogs are reliable and effective in their work.
